Financial Aid

All financial aid at Memphis University School is need-based. Once a student receives financial aid, it is the policy of the school to continue this financial aid until graduation, provided there is continued need. The program is funded by earnings from several endowment funds, by donations to the Annual Fund, and by the operating budget. This year more than $1,500,000 was awarded in various amounts to approximately 26% of our students.

Memphis University School does not discriminate on the basis of race, religion, color, national or ethnic origin in administration of its educational policies, admissions policies, financial aid programs, or athletic and school-administered programs.

In order to be considered for financial aid, parents or legal guardians must do three things:

1. Complete the Parents Financial Statement (PFS) provided by School and Student Service for Financial Aid (SSS) in Princeton, NJ. Copies are available in the Business Office. The SSS is an independent agency which processes and analyzes an applicant's financial data. It provides MUS with a recommendation regarding the amount of assistance needed, if any. You may complete the application and mail it directly to SSS or complete the application online. If you have two or more sons who will attend MUS, you only need to complete one form. The SSS will not supply copies of your completed PFS, so please make a copy for your records. Note: MUS recommends mailing the application rather than using the online option.

2. Send copies of your W-2s, federal income tax return, and all schedules you completed for 2008 to the Financial Aid Office at MUS by March 5, 2009. The tax return you send must be signed by both parents. In case of divorce or separate tax filings, please send a copy of each parent's W-2, 2008 federal income tax return, and schedules. Parents of new students have until March 17, 2009 to submit the forms.

3. Complete the Financial Assistance (Supplemental Information) Form and return it to the MUS Business Office by March 5, 2009. The form is also available in PDF format.

Additional Information:

1.  Financial aid is determined on a yearly basis; therefore, it is necessary to re-apply each year. A returning student can expect financial aid to continue if a financial need is determined and satisfactory academic and citizenship records are maintained.

2. The School Scholarship Service will send an analysis of your Parents Financial Statement (PFS) to MUS showing their assessment of the Total Parents Contribution for Education. You should receive a decision from the MUS Financial Aid Committee shortly after all documents have been received.

3. If your son participates in a varsity sport, the Tennessee Secondary School Athletic Association requires us to supply them certain financial data that you have given us and they place restrictions on the amount of aid that can be offered for the student to retain eligibility.

4. Any student receiving financial aid is required to purchase Tuition Refund Insurance (approximately $250 per year).

5. Please comply with the March 5, 2009 deadline. Since the school has limited financial aid money available each year, it is important to submit the required information to MUS by the March 5, 2009 deadline. Financial aid requests are handled on a first-come, first-serve basis, so if you are late in submitting your request, we may not be able to offer you assistance for next year, even if you received aid this year.

6. Regarding the matter of divorce or separation, the Financial Aid Committee will consider the assets of both natural parents before making an award decision, and will not be bound by the assertion that one parent has disclaimed responsibility for educational expenses.

7. Remarriage of either parent creates a new family unit with new relationships. The noncustodial parent (and any spouse) must also file the necessary financial aid forms.
